Plaquenil can cause serious side effects when used in high doses for chronic diseases such as RA over the long term. The New Zealand Dermatological Society recommends that to decrease the risk of retina damage, no more than 200mg of Plaquenil should be taken a day, and a dose of 400mg per day should be taken no longer than a few weeks. The first year or two I was on plaquenil I didn’t have a normal bowel movement for as long as I could remember and was constantly nauseous and could barely eat. It was always diarrhea the first few hours after I woke up but then I’d be fine the rest of the day. but my doctors have always said it’s impossible for this to be from plaquenil. Aug 18, 2009 Ginny, I had some very minor diarrhea, nausea, cramping for about a week when I started Plaquenil. Everyone is different, but for me, taking the med about 15 min. after eating, rather than before or with a meal, makes things much easier on my stomach, even for just Advil.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.
