Lichen planopilaris LPP is a rare chronic scarring folliculitis of the scalp of unknown cause Figure 1. It is considered a primary scarring alopecia since the follicle itself is targeted by inflammatory cells and scarring occurs first and primarily around the follicular unit. A variety of systemic agents are used to treat lichen planopilaris LPP with a limited evidence base. The aim of our study was to retrospectively review the response rate to and tolerability of hydroxychloroquine in a cohort of patients with LPP in an effort to add to the evidence base for its use. Lichen Planopilaris Treatment. Of all the alopecias, both non-scarring and scarring, lichen planopilaris is the most difficult to treat. There have been no well-controlled trials documenting the benefit of any therapy in LPP. Since there is no possibility of regrowth in the scarred areas, the goal of treatment is to prevent enlargement.

Whatever treatment you use, you'll need to visit your doctor for follow-up appointments about once a year. If the disease affects your mucous membranes, it tends to be more resistant to treatment and prone to recur.

What is the correct way to discontinue use of plaquenil? Nov 12, 2009 Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up.
