Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Last week my doc added plaquenil to the mix. I have a pharmacist friend that says it can take up to a year to work, but once its kicks in it can be really good. I suggest you ask your rhuemie for additional help in the meantime. I have had RA going on 12 years, and originally way back when I ws given plaquenil alone and it did nothing. Had headaches with the plaquenil so went to the sulfar and predisone. Sulfar was a waste of time and since I had a little help from the plaquenil he switched me back to that with pain meds for the headaches and body. Recently i went back for app. and plaquenil had stopped doing anything so he added the methotrexate to it. I did not want to take it.

I do occasionally experience dry eyes and a little scalp itch but asserting that it's caused by Hydrochloroquine would be anecdotal at best. It took about 5 weeks to take effect but my RA is basically a non factor now.
