Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is an antimalarial medication used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites, which enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Plaquenil is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Hydroxychloroquine therapy has not been associated with liver function abnormalities and is an extremely rare cause of clinically apparent acute liver injury. Hydroxychloroquine is also used to treat and prevent certain types of malaria. It may also be used for the treatment of lupus. This medication may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms.
